Sheffield Contour map - 3D model

I have laser cut the contour line out of A3 card. It is mad up of 9 layers all together, and both the normal and the inverse both look good. The bottom image is the inverse, nowhere the highest point is on the model, the deepest part is in real life.
For my final piece I am thinking of doing this, made using MDF painted in different colours, but I am going to try using different materials swell to see which one looks the best.
I think it would look good in steel, but the facilities we have wouldn't be able to cut steel.

This is roughly the area of map that I used, I have been thinking about adding in the M1 (& M18) and the A roads on a separate layer, or cut them from all of the layers so there is just a gap. I also want to put the names of the bigger areas such as Sheffield and Rotherham on, but i am not sure how to incorporate these easily, unless I attached them to the real layer and only etched them not cut.
